Brief History of Meridian Therapies. Modern meridian therapies began in 1964 when Dr. George Goodheart a Chiropractor, was inspired by the work of Florence Kendall and went on to invent a diagnostic therapy using muscle strength.. This was refined over a number of years and drew on the work of Kendall and Kendall, Mann, amongst others until it was officially named Applied Kinesiology and utilized the acupuncture meridian points.
In 1974, the International College of Applied Kinesiology was set up by John Thie who went on to publish the first manual of these techniques, aimed at the general public for use on themselves. Shortly after this, John Diamond becomes the first psychiatrist to experiment with Applied Kinesiology as a diagnostic tool in his psychotherapy work and developed the system called Behavioural Kinesiology
He also developed the use of affirmations with tapping.
By 1979, after studying with John Diamond, psychoanalyst, Roger Callaghan combines the techniques on a patient who was severely water-phobic with spectacular success. He goes on to call this the Callahan Techniques Thought Field. Applied Kinesiology had a problem with psychological reversal, Callahan, by identifying its manifestations and discovering that the small intestine point on the side of the hand would treat it, made a significant breakthrough. His high media profile also introduced these therapies to a wider audience.
At the annual conference of the American Psychological Association in 1995 TFT was shown to be effective in the treatment of psychotrauma by Carbonell and Figley although it was only preliminary results.
In the same year Gary Craig develops the Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, building on the knowledge gained when training under Callahan, but it takes a couple more years until video training series and workshops are launched.
In the meantime other students of Callahan and others from related fields, start to develop their own therapies e.g. Fred Gallo and Tapas Fleming. EFT is beginning to take off, so much so, that in 1998 The Association For Meridian Therapies & Energy Psychology was formed by Chrissie Hardisty and Silvia Hartmann to be the first administrative body in this burgeoning field. The following year the first conference was held.
Along the way, many key books have been published, from the first published in 1949 by Florence Kendall, called Muscle Testing and Function., via John Diamonds’ Your Body Doesn’t Lie in 1980, The Five Minute Phobia Cure by Roger Callahan in 1985, right up
to Patricia Carrington Choices- How To Create Positive Changes In Energy Psychology in 2001. |
So How does it works? It is simple. We focus on the though, which brings forth the unplesent emotional or physical problem. We measure how intense our filling or pain is.
*Then we tap or massage on certain acupoints on the face, chest and hands. Tapping or massaging on the acupuncturepoints initiate the flow of energy through the energy channels or meridians, thus correcting the disturbance in the energy field associated with that problem.
*Then we again check the intensity of the feeling.
*We keep doing this tapping, checking how we feel, until the problem disappears.
